Siemens Science School

Some 50 Fifth Formers got a closer look at science at the three-day Siemens Science School held recently in Christchurch. Siemens organises such schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, in conjunction with support from local Rotary Clubs; the Christchurch school was the first to be held in the South Island. The hands-on schools aim to promote an interest in science and a desire to continue with science-based subjects in the senior school and at tertiary level, and are are seen as complementary to those available to senior students.

Morning group activities in Canterbury's Faculty of Science, School of Engineering and School of Forestry were followed by visits to industrial sites in the afternoons.

The morning programme covered scientific analysis, life sciences and experimental physics, with activities including looking at mathematical models of biological systems, computer controlled manufacturing, blood analysis and analytical techniques in wood processing.

The students visited the Canterbury ring laser and a variety of science-based Christchurch industries: Canterbury Regional Council, Defiance Flour Mills, Meadow Fresh Milk Treatment Station, Cardinal Technologies, Skope Industries, Canterbury Television and Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

Student evaluations of the school were very positive.

"I enjoyed all activities but the ones where we actually got to do things were best," said one.
