Earth Science Resources

The Web offers a great deal of information and activities for people interested in earth sciences, ranging across volcanoes, earthquakes and other aspects of geology and geophysics.

This is a very colourful site that makes extensive use of graphics. The pages deal with plate tectonics, rocks and volcanoes. It contains some useful lessons especially in the area of volcanoes. Some of the images would be great in worksheets or as OHPs. http://www.rses.vuw.ac.nz/seismology/igns_report.html
This is the New Zealand site where you can get up-to-date information on the latest earthquake to hit New Zealand. I looked the day I wrote this to find that there had been an earthquake near Hastings that morning. http://vif3.icair.iac.org.nz/education/module_1/index.htm
Another New Zealand Web site specifically developed with teaching geography in mind, is this one by DOSLI. http://www.nhm.ac.uk/
The Natural History Museum in London has geoscience information specially targetted at education. http://www.goodearth.com/virtcave.html
The Virtual Cave site has material on caves, minerals, rocks and education. http://observe.ivv.nasa.gov/
This is the Observatorium -- NASA's public access site for earth and space data, remote sensing, geological surveys and education. http;//www.geomar.de/personal/mwein/omc_bg_info.html
Sites like this demonstrate the power of the Web. This is an online map creation service. The site is in its infancy but still a smart and useful way of using the technology. http://www.rocksnstuff.com/
Called the Rockman's Trading Post, you can purchase a huge array of earth science resources here. Remember this site is in the US, so prices are $US. http://www.lincoln.ac.nz
This is Lincoln University. Here, under Ara Nui, you will find links to a large number of New Zealand sites, including New Zealand earth science links. http://www.ucmp1.berkeley.edu/
The University of California Museum of Paleontology specialises in earth science and geological time resources.
