Horsing Around

AgResearch has established an equine research programme to study the growth and development of young horses.

The first project will investigate the influence of nutrition, especially copper in the feed, on bone and cartilage development, a key factor in structural soundness. In the second study, mares and their foals will be run on different pasture types, with research focusing on how the pasture types affect growth, particularly bone development.

This study has already received strong support from thoroughbred breeders. Several have committed mares to the project, with over 70 already at Flock House near Bulls. Negotiations to acquire two or three stallions are under way.
