Impermanent Permafrost

A research team from Land & Soil Consultancy Services has found human activity to have had significant environmental impact on Antarctic permafrost.

Permafrost at Marble Point has shown little evidence of natural rehabilitation 30 years after construction took place, with the disturbed surfaces being clearly identifiable. The team did note that natural processes had been able to eliminate foot imprints and that mosses and algae were recolonising some areas. They will monitor the area to learn more about how permafrost functions in the Antarctic landscape.
