Kakapo Kai

Kakapo on Little Barrier Island have had interesting additions to their diet, courtesy of the Department of Conservation. The birds seem to be pleased by the offerings. Staff have laid out over forty different kinds of food at ten feeding stations. The kakapo have settled for kumara, apples, sunflower seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts and carrots.

The supplementary feeds were established before the breeding season. DoC reports that males feeding regularly at the stations have been booming (making a courtship display) two months earlier than usual, and birds are heavier than previously recorded.
