Quick DipsLake Taupo PulsatingLake Taupo may look calm, but DSIR scientists have found that the water is oscillating and sloshing around. Careful measurements show that the lake water moves north-south every 35 minutes and east-west every 30 minutes. In addition, the different densities of the water layers prompts water movements under the surface which change direction every 16-19 hours. Studying the lake water's behaviour allows accurate measurements of the lake level for hydro-power purposes. It could also provide an indication of subterranean changes that may herald volcanic activity. |
