Quick DipsUser Unfriendly?People today use a wide range of complex machines, from computers to microwaves. Few consciously recognise the sophistication of the operating skills required. Carol Trudel, a PhD student at Auckland University, is investigating the ways people approach learning those skills and the difficulties they encounter. The research will provide understanding of how people process information. It will also be of direct applied value, suggesting appropriate guidelines for better machine design. Many machines have elaborate instruction manuals and are complex to operate. Gaining a greater understanding of how people process information will enable the design of machines which are easier to operate and understand. Carol Trudel is interested in hearing about people's problems with machines or systems. Please send a short note describing your frustrations and solutions (if any) to: Carol Trudel, Auckland University, Psychology Department, HSB-6, Private Bag, Auckland. |
