White Island Studies

"Does it erupt once every 5,000 years or every 500 years?" asks Ian Wright of DSIR's Oceanographic Institute. "We just don't know."

The information will provide an assessment of the risk associated with the island. It will also provide important information on volcanic processes. The DSIR has been working around White Island with the University of Liverpool to study how volcanic material moves into the marine environment.

"There aren't too many areas where you can do that, so the overseas people are quite excited about it," says Wright.
