Going My Way?

Computer dating has made way for computer car pooling at Lincoln University, where students and staff can use the Lincoln Connection Rideshare Web site ( www.lincoln.ac.nz/rideshare/) to find out who is going where and when.

The pilot transportation programme originated as an idea with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, and has been developed by a team at Lincoln to handle regular 21-km commuting distance between Christchurch and Lincoln, as well as long-distance travel needs. The system includes bus timetables, telephone numbers for bus and taxi services, and Internet connections to airline, rail and intercity bus companies.

Rideshare provides the user with the email address, origin zone and destination of those who would be a compatible match. It is then up to the user to make the contacts and arrangements for the actual ridesharing.

As a special encouragement to use the service, a conveniently located priority parking area has been set aside on campus for Rideshare carpools.
