Science TV Coverage

Having been spoilt by the BBC whilst living in the UK for the past seven years, I was saddened to find out that the Natural History Unit of New Zealand has produced high quality documentaries which will not be aired [GIGO, September].

Now I have returned to NZ and the appalling US-style TV of modern day New Zealand. To whom should I write to lobby for the screening of the NHU documentaries?

Dr Kathleen Logan

From the sound of the Radio New Zealand item I was listening to, attempting to appeal to TVNZ itself won't be much help. But you can always try -- Andrew Shaw is TVNZ's General Manager of Programming and Acquisitions. The Minister responsible, as mentioned in the editorial, is Maurice Williamson.

My recommendation would be to write to Down to Earth, the current sponsors of the Our World timeslot. Tell them how much you appreciate their sponsorship and how strongly you feel about the desirability of seeing New Zealand natural history on New Zealand television. Perhaps that approach will produce a champion for our world. Good luck and watch out for those windmills....
