Retorts

Kaka Kaput?

It was distressing to read from Peter Wilson, Landcare Research [%Xref=|1000|June=%] that kaka breeding in the wild continue to be at great risk from predators, and seldom breed successfully. Realistically, it is unlikely that predation will decrease.

This being so, I wonder why aviarists are not encouraged to breed these beautiful birds, and other endangered species, rather than being discouraged or prohibited as at present. Could Peter Wilson or some policy maker please explain?

Pat Palmer, Christchurch

The Department of Conservation has promised an article on this; they felt that it would not be possible to give an adequate response in the space available in the Retorts column.
