RetortsAre Hormones Really to Blame?A TV item a while ago reported that boys were starting to fall behind girls at senior school levels because of too many distractions. The most obvious one was if the young hormonally-driven male had a car or not. Car possession correlated with a drop in scholastic attainment. Hormones and other distractions -- after-school jobs, sports, computer games -- were also cited. These have been used as explanations for the poor participation of males in science fairs in recent times. But surely these sorts of distractions have always been there? It's not as if this generation of males invented puberty! So what's different? P.Dalton |
