LONGMANS WRITE-ON NOTES BIOLOGY YEAR 11 (FORM 5) by Rachel Heeney; Longman, 1998; 92 pp; $12.95

Reviewed by Janet Holder

This new resource has been written specifically for the new Year 11 biology curriculum and provides an excellent introduction to the various sections of the curriculum. Each chapter has clear headings and sub-headings, and lists the relevant achievement objectives from the Biology Curriculum document, together with specific learning outcomes. This makes it very clear to the student exactly what they are expected to know by the end of the course.

Keywords are emphasized through bolding and there is also a comprehensive glossary at the back. The format is excellent, with plenty of diagrams, and the pages are laid out using the split page concept, enabling students to summarise their notes as they go, thus assisting the learning process.

These notes provide a good means of ensuring that the student obtains the key points without spending hours copying notes from the board, and allows the teacher to spend more time on practical work.
