NZSM Science Photography Competition

This year's ECNZ-NZSM Science Photography Competition attracted entries from around the country and a number of international participants as well. Scientists and school students, professional photographers and home enthusiasts were all represented, competing in biological and physical categories as well as for the overall grand prize.

The judging panel had a difficult time, citing the range of photos and subject matter as presenting hard choices in determining the winning entries. They based their decisions on two main criteria -- artistic and scientific merit. Not only were the photos required to be aesthetically pleasing, but the judges were also looking for images that said something about the science behind them.

"For an organisation as dependent on science as ECNZ, it is vital that we play a part in fostering an interest in science," says ECNZ sponsorship manager Heather Newell. "Through our sponsorship involvement in Science Fairs and Beyond 2000, we have emphasised how widely science affects our lives. The photographic competition is yet another instance of how broad-based an interest in science can be. It's not just about research -- there is art in science too!"

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the nature of science in New Zealand, the bulk of the entries were in the biological category, from shots of the genetic manipulation of mouse zygotes to special breeds of song birds.

A selection of the best entries will be on display at the Christchurch Photographers' Gallery for three weeks in December.

Our thanks to all entrants and we look forward to seeing your work in next year's competition.
