RetortsNuke the Mountains! In order to make mountain hydro storage [Nov] economically viable, nuclear blasting techniques should be used for the excavation of storage caverns. These were widely advocated in the 1960s for similar projects. There is an ample supply of unwanted nuclear devices, and suitable drilling equipment will shortly be available from the French government at a discounted price. Thermal decay of the resulting radioactivity will heat the water, thereby providing an additional source of energy. The public may complain initially, but they will soon enjoy the benefits of cheaper electricity. Simon Ward, Christchurch |
