A Massey University study of the mathematical needs of adults has revealed strong support for changes to the New Zealand school mathematics curriculum this year

Research leader Professor Gordon Knight suggested, however, that while the curriculum has taken the right step in introducing problem solving, statistical and computer skills, there should be a further step to formally recognise them.

"I feel quite strongly that people should have the opportunity to show they can do other mathematics such as mental arithmetic and calculator use. They need to show they can do the maths needed in the workplace," he said.
