I have another speculative notion your readers may enjoy:

If extraterrestrial beings visiting us in our past had wanted to leave some sort of `present' for us to find when we became technologically advanced enough to understand it, wouldn't they have left it at one of the Moon's poles, since they exist independently of any mapping system and do not shift over geological time?
