DiscoverySCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY KITS, Forestry Insights,1995; 5 booklets per kit; $60 (special rate $40 if ordered on special form). Forestry Insights have been around for a number of years now, and the latest batch continues the tradition of offering context-based teaching material in the area of forestry. Each page of the booklets contains material relating to one main idea or learning activity and is easily photocopiable for use in a classroom. The activities can be used a part of a unit of work with forestry as a learning context, or you could simply pick out the relevant resource material and use it as you see fit. The most recent productions in the kit contain material for physics and chemistry, biotechnology and general science. The material in the kit relates directly to New Zealand curricula and, in the case of science, each curriculum level and the skills associated with each activity are identified. The biotechnology booklet is aimed at senior secondary school students, as is the physics and chemistry. The general science booklet is designed more for the lower end of the secondary school. Many of the activities incorporate some of the newer ideas relating to learning strategies and learning styles as well as some of the more traditional type worksheets. Many are self contained and all are straightforward to set up and implement, requiring little in the way of sophisticated equipment or time consuming planning. There are also booklets for information technology, design technology and social studies, maths and economics. A very useful booklet called Helping Hands contains names and addresses for contact people in the industry all over New Zealand. If you have never come across Forestry Insights, they will be in your school somewhere, as every school has been sent copies. Have a look at them as you may well find some valuable resources on your doorstep untouched. If you wish to obtain more information write to: Forestry Insights Individual resources and posters are also available. Greg Walker, NZSM |
