PATHWAYS THROUGH SCIENCE, Ed. David Brodie; Longman Group UK, 1993; 40 pp; $16.50 ea.

Longmans have produced a range of books in this series. Earth and Atmosphere (Level 5, "Planet Earth and Beyond", Achievement Objectives 1 and 2) provides good detail and up-to-date information, but its strong British bias detracts from it somewhat. It is well presented, attractive and easy to read and could also be used at Level 4, Achievement Objectives 1 and 2. It describes in a very lucid manner how the Earth's surface changes over time. Making Materials again has a strong British emphasis but I liked this book and see it as being a useful information source at Level 5 in any course on materials and as an introductory text at Level 6. While this book would be a useful library resource it would fit in well in class work with the Strand "Making Sense of the Nature of Science and Technology", Level 5, Achievement Objectives 2 and 3. It could also be used at Level 6 of this Strand in which students have to investigate how knowledge of science and technology is used by society when making decisions about environment issues (AO 3).
