The Forest Research Institute hopes to benefit from collaborating with universities on forestry research programmes.

One particular area of research set to benefit from this is FRI's molecular genetics programme. Forestry researchers hope to learn from the methodology developed by the University of Otago's Biochemistry Department in its work on gene mapping. Even though the university researchers work on sheep rather than trees, some of the techniques should be applicable to FRI's studies.
