Concerning Mike Hamblyn's piece on museums [Viewpoint, June], you have to ask whether it's appropriate for museums to be doing research in the first place. Surely their primary function is to educate and entertain the public, but Hamblyn seems to deplore this.

Haven't we already got enough government-funded institutions doing the research side of science?
