Quick DipsSilage JuiceSilage juice is a potential water pollutant 200 times stronger than raw domestic sewage, 40 times that of dairy waste and about eight times that of raw piggery waste. Auckland Regional Council rural waste officers have been inspecting silage stacks in the region in the hopes of minimising the volume of juice produced and its run-off into local water courses. "If pasture is wilted, preferably for up to six hours before stacking, it will not only greatly reduce the amount of juice produced, but will also provide a much higher quality feed," says waste officer Tony Thompson. |
