Possum Products

A possum fur-lined swandri and possum chili con carne were hit products at the Possum Innovators competition held in Palmerston North recently. Judges were impressed at the range and standard of entries, and have identified a number with potential marketing possibilities. Possum coats and cardigans were shown off at a fashion show.

"While it's noble to fight the anti-fur cause in relation to endangered species and young arctic seals, the fall in the skin trade has created a huge problem in New Zealand," notes Chris Baty, export marketing manager for Sherwood Producers, a fur exporter. "That's why were keen to support any initiative which may start people buying fur products again, which in turn will help reduce a major problem in our forests."
