Quick DipsA Whale Of A TimeTen Otago University students recently braved midwinter seas to rescue an inflatable whale. Department of Conservation staff used the inflatable whale to demonstrate the basic steps that should be followed when rescuing stranded whales. It is hoped that the five-metre plastic prototype, owned by DOC, will give would-be whale rescuers the skills required to save stranded whales. It inflates to roughly the same size as a pilot whale, and can be filled with water to give a better idea as to the weight of a whale. Lynda Gray, Otago University |
