RetortsVolcanic ReliefCongratulations to the NZSM on passing your first anniversary. Congratulations also on an enlightening overview of the current state of the nation's volcano monitoring [Volcano Alert, September]. Living, as we do, in the shadow of Taranaki, it is not at all reassuring to know of its potential for releasing large amounts of debris down the valleys towards the coast. However, we were pleased to learn of the efforts of Civil Defence and the university teams to set up a monitoring network around the mountain. Does this mean that we would get effective warning of any significant eruption, or is the science still too little developed to offer clear predictions? Barry & Glen Fisher, Opunake |
