Quick DipsSoftware StarsVictoria University has recently set up the beginnings of an on-line software library with international access for data on variable star analysis. Many computer-based techniques have been developed to analyse the way in which the brightness varies in variable stars [Twin Stars, Dec91/Jan92]. Such analysis can tell astronomers a great deal about the types of stars involved and their relationships with other stars. Unfortunately, obtaining copies of the computer software in compatible formats has often been difficult. "It is hoped that our `archive' will be a dynamic listing of the available computer based methods, acting as another means of distribution for them, and indeed rather like a `real' library of books -- where copies may be taken out, and donations to the collection of both additions and new editions gratefully received," say Tim Banks and Edwin Budding, who are organising the software library. |
