Quick DipsSole Taiko Chick SurvivesOnly one of three known taiko chicks survived to fledgling this breeding season, raising deep concerns over the long-term survival of the Chatham Island seabird. The tube-nosed taiko, a large petrel, was thought to be extinct until two were found in 1978. Nine years later, the first nesting burrow was discovered. Despite extensive searches this breeding season, no more were found to add to the tally of three known breeding burrows. Up to six breeding pairs and 50-70 birds are now thought to exist. The two chicks that did not survive apparently died of starvation. "We are not sure why the other two starved," said Andy Grant of the Department of Conservation. "We are doing all we can to save them from predators, but we cannot do much to boost their food supply at sea." |
