Under The Microscope

LOCAL HISTORY by Gavin McLean; Bridget Williams Books and the Historical Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, 1992; 136 pages; $17.95.

Why is the NZSM reviewing a history book? Because this Short Guide To Researching, Writing, and Publishing A Local History is worth a place on a scientist's shelf as an aid to researching, writing, and publishing anything at all.

The Internal Affairs Department is separately covering other areas of history -- women, iwi, oral and trade union histories -- which leaves the bulk of this book free to explain things which are useful to us all. It is a handbook of research, including notes on how to take notes. It is also a manual of writing, including advice on what photographs to choose. It is an introduction to publishing, including an appendix on where to find money.

Many students and most lecturers would profit from the author's brisk common-sense. The book itself, beautifully printed, splendidly illustrated, and inexpensive, is a cheerful example of how to do it right.
