Under The Microscope

WORLD RESOURCES 1992-93, edited by Dr A. L. Hammond; Oxford University Press, 1992; 399 pages; $59-95

I tend to steer clear of books of this nature, wary of purchasing publications which require regular updating, but I would make an exception for this UN-supported series. World Resources is designed to present "accessible, accurate information" and it does this extremely well. Unlike many similar tomes, it has clear notes indicating the limitations of its statistical data, as well as comprehensive reference sections following each chapter.

Each volume in this series has a particular focus. This one looks at sustainable development, with a considerable amount of well-presented essays on the basic issues and their implications, both at a global and local level. Within each chapter, a series of boxes provides a focus on a relevant major topicgiving you a chance to look at the issues in greater depth than is normally available in almanacs of this type.

Libraries, schools and the well- stocked home reference section would do well to consider picking up some of this series. I await the next issue with interest.
