The latest issue of NZSM has just reached me with its flyer for the conference on "Maximising the Return from RS&T", with NZSM as its official publication.

Who's conning who??! NZSM's main aim is to popularise current NZ science to the interested public. This meeting is of CEOs, businessmen and an MP -- not a scientist (practising) amongst them. It's about maximising profits from the work of others, monetary profits, not benefits from humankind. And the costs of some $2100 for registration, accommodation and air fare reflect this quite clearly. What CRI scientist is going to be able to attend (except as a paid advertisement for the CRI)? Again I ask, who's conning who?
