Donald S. McDonald's problem [Retorts, Oct] is not with numbers, but with a reluctance, common among scientists, to identify the actors in their prose, and to make these actors the subjects of their sentences.

The Telecom workers did not lose their jobs like Little Bo Peep's sheep. The correct sentence is:
"Telecom made 835 workers redundant today."
